Get in the Game: Fellowship

One of the best gifts of laboring in the vineyard is the fellowship with like-minded Christians.  John writes in 1 John 1:1-3, “What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life—and the life was manifested, and we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us—what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. These things we write, so that our joy may be made complete.”

The fellowship of the Saints on the earth is grounded in our great God and Savior, is part of the gift of salvation, reflects the fellowship of the trinity and is intended to bring great joy.

When you are with other Saints who’s passion is to preach the Gospel and therefore love the Lord Jesus there is tremendous joy. The fellowship before, during and after an outreach creates ongoing conversations regarding Scripture, evangelistic encounters, methods of ‘fishing for souls’ and ‘sewing the Seed’, prayers and general intimate Christian interaction.

The interaction at Sports Fan Outreach is based on evangelistic work but when pastors or teachers gather there is surely a similar type of intimacy. However, evangelistic work brings about a particular focus on the cross of Christ, salvation, sanctification and often apologetics.

If you like or are called to evangelistic work then you will find that becoming immersed in the work leads you to intimacy with other evangelists and that facilitates the joy from the work.

Open Air Preaching: Unbelief is the answer.

Why do Christians not engage in the Great Commission?  Unbelief. If Christians believed that men were sinners and believed in the power of the Gospel to save sinners they would take action to alleviate mankind from sin by the preaching of the Gospel.

The supreme evidence of sin is unbelief. Only by prolonged and deep sanctification which produces mature Christians does a Christian believe that man is a sinner and that the Gospel is the singular power to save.

The Apostle Paul represents to Gentiles this trajectory: he was a legalist and persecuted the church; then Jesus saves him on the road to Damascus; Paul, then Saul, preaches in the Damascus synagogue that Jesus is the Christ; but then he disappears to be taught the Gospel by direct revelation of Jesus Christ where he is brought to the place of belief in the Gospel.

Paul believes the Gospel is the power to save souls from sin and he lives his life preaching the Gospel because it is the power to save men from sin.

Do you believe men need to be saved?  Do you believe in the power of  the Gospel to save them? If yes then what are you doing about it? How are you engaged in the work of the Gospel?

Open Air Preaching: No pain no fruit…

People today are told to avoid pain.  The culture of comfort dominates the landscape. Even Christians often perceive if it hurts it’s not of God.

However, this section of Hebrews tells us the opposite.  In fact, you could say, that if you are not experiencing pain you are not a child of God and conversely if you are willing to take the pain you will bear much fruit.  Ask yourself: “Am I willing to take the pain of discipline”?

Jesus was perfected through His obedience on the earth, endured the ultimate level of pain as He took our sins upon Himself and of course bore the most fruit of anyone born of a woman.

As you read these verses again ask yourself “Am I willing to take the pain of discipline?” Or “Am I  trying to avoid the pain?”  Think about this: “the more pain you are willing to take the more fruitful you’ll be in your ministry; the more souls who will hear the Gospel; the more glory for the Lord”.

Hebrews 12:4-17

You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin; and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons,

My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,
Nor faint when you are reproved by Him;
For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines,
And He scourges every son whom He receives.”

It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

Grey Cup ’16 Report

Kevin Katzmann led a team of 14 evangelists to proclaim the Gospel to the fans attending the Canadian Football League’s Championship game called the Grey Cup held in Toronto, Canada Sunday, November 27th. Here is Kevin’s detailed report: Kevin Katzmann’s Grey Cup ’16 Report.

Kevin’s team ministered at the location of the Go Train Station which has two green circles at the top of the map. The fans would exit the train and walk due south to BMO Field a distance of probably 50 yards at most.  Most of the fans went to the game via the Go Train meaning Kevin and his team would have saturated the fans attending the Grey Cup with the Gospel.

bmo-field-go-train-station

If you’ve ever been to Toronto you know it sits on Lake Ontario which is the water in the above map.  Toronto, a self proclaimed international city, is only 98 miles from Buffalo, NY and 231 miles from Detroit, MI where the Michigan Football Weekend is held.

In 2015 an SFOI Team evangelized in Toronto during the Commonwealth Games and last February we were there for the NBA All-Star Weekend. From experience Toronto is an excellent city for ministry meaning there are plenty of souls out and about to hear the Gospel and they are from around the world.

Kevin accepted the offer to organize and lead a team to the Grey Cup. Kevin ministers every Friday night in Hamilton which is 41 miles from Toronto and so may of his team made the trip to BMO Field.

You can see a picture of BMO Field here.  The Go Train Station is one block away from the northeast corner of the picture.  Thus the Grey Cup fans would have walked south one block from the Go Train Station on Nova Scotia Ave. to arrive at BMO Field.  Kevin’s team ministered at the Go Train Station and across the street from the northeast corner below near the tall red sign.

You can see ministry pictures here: Grey Cup ’16.

However here are a few from left to right. The corner where the tall red sign is Justin, right, is preaching; Jesse, blue jacket, and Michael, orange toboggan, distributing tracts near Go Train Station; fans walking to BMO Field from corner with tall red sign; and fans walking to BMO Field as they have just left the Go Train Station.

The outreach was wonderfully fruitful as most of the 30,000 fans attending the Grey Cup were provided the Divine gift of hearing the Gospel and being presented the opportunity to respond.

Thank you Kevin Katzmann and your team for making the journey to BMO Field.

Grey Cup – Toronto – Nov. 27

Michigan Football Weekend: 11-19-16

Praise the Lord for a great day.

Jason Bradshaw, the host and organizer of the MFW prepared a wonderful day which began at 8:00 AM at his church Bethesda Baptist located in Allen Park. Prayer was first followed by breakfast and message from Pastor Bob Moore who happens to be a native of Allen Park. This was the second year for Bethesda Baptist to serve as a location for our prayer and breakfast time.

Pastor Moore spoke from Matthew 28:16-20 which is commonly referred to as the ‘Great Commission’ passages.

“But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Pastor Moore explained the authority contained in the verses.  He said that the disciples met Jesus in Galilee because Jesus told them to thus a demonstration of His authority, the disciples worshipped Him, He sent them out in and under His authority and that His authority would be with them as they went.

Thus for us, as evangelists, operate under His authority and therefore should be humble preachers of the Word.

Then by 10:00 AM we departed for Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan vs. Indiana game. The game is held at ‘The Big House’ whose capacity is 107,601 making it the largest stadium in the US and second largest in the world.

‘The Big House’ provides an excellent ministry location at Green Street and E Hoover, where our team was located, and further up Green Street closer to the stadium, where Jason’s team was located.

This is a picture from our location. You can see the huge crowds coming at us.

Open Air Preaching: The Word bypasses the Old Man

Hebrews 4:12 tells us, “For the Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

What item, or power, is able to by-pass the Old Man which is the outer man or visible part of man’s being, and penetrate to the soul of man?  Scripture tells us the Word of God is able even to the point where we are unable to hide from the revealing power of the Word.

There are two points: first, the Old Man is defenseless against the Word.  He can defend himself from various and sundry intellectual arguments and perhaps perform great physical feats where he proclaims his own greatness but he has no ability to stop the Word from entering his soul and doing Its work.

Jesus address’s this in Luke when He tells the Pharisees in Luke 11:37-40, “Now when He had spoken, a Pharisee *asked Him to have lunch with him; and He went in, and reclined at the table. When the Pharisee saw it, he was surprised that He had not first ceremonially washed before the meal. But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter; but inside of you, you are full of robbery and wickedness. You foolish ones, did not He who made the outside make the inside also?”

Jesus as the incarnate Word speaks to the Pharisees’ self-proclaimed superiority by renouncing their perspective and drawing their attention to their soul.  Verses 53-54 show the ability of His Word to reveal the intentions of their heart: “ When He left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to question Him closely on many subjects, plotting against Him to catch [Him in something He might say.”

The second point of Hebrews 4:12 is that it explains why preachers preach the Word because it penetrates into the soul of the hearer.  Jesus’ interaction with the Pharisees above, and in fact the whole of His ministry, proves the point of the power of the Word proclaimed and therefore heard.  It is the only power that by passes the Old Man and his arguments and penetrates into the souls of a man revealing the intentions of the heart and thus producing a response.
