SFOI 1000: Kurtis engaging heckler at OSU

Here you see Kurtis, on left, who has been preaching. To the right a ‘heckler’ or someone who is not joyful to see and hear Kurtis preaching.

Why does this happen? Why do people respond to the preaching in a disagreeable manner?

Hebrews 4:12-13 says: 12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

In other words the authority, purity and power of the Word brings a conviction to the depth of a man’s soul. This results in a response. Often an awkward and irrelevant response meaning a response that is not appropriate or commensurate to what is being said

This conviction demonstrates the blindness and deafness that sin has brought to the soul. Thus the man just says whatever comes to mind first.

In Kurtis’ case he asked Kurtis what his favorite verse was. Instead of approaching Kurtis in a reasonable manner and thereby asking Kurtis to elaborate for his own edification he challenged Kurtis.

Sin has set man against man when we should be at peace with each other. So the sin in the ‘heckler’ and in all ‘hecklers’ leads to an interaction. Hopefully the interaction is profitable to the soul believing on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation.

Ultimately this is why preachers preach so these interactions can occur to the eternal benefit of the hearer of the Word.

Open Air Preaching: New Orleans Saints

Above is Richard Kellar preaching Words of life to New Orleans Saints fans on Sunday, October 29th. Richard is a faithful brother who minsters around New Orleans.

Here’s he is simply proclaiming the Gospel as the fans pass. ‘Some sow, some water, but God gives the increase’.

The Bible tells us that the Word is sown into the souls of man. This means you ave two dynamics at work: the Word or Seed and the soul. Matthew 13 gives an extended explanation of this interaction (Matthew 13:1-30). The Word contains life and if it is received into the soul then their is a new birth (1 Peter 1:23).

Does the farmer who sows his natural seed look for an immediate crop when his seed goes into the ground?  No. Does the farmer anticipate the seed coming out of the ground slowly and over time does it come to the place to be harvested?  Yes.

The same with the evangelist: he is to sow and water the seed and if he is faithful the seed will come out of the ground at some level.  Of course in the Matthew 13 parable Jesus explains the 4 types of ground.  Thus the level of the maturity of the seed appears to be in part based on the gourd into which it was sown.

Either way, the evangelist’s job continues to be to sow and water the Word which is what Richard is doing in the picture above.

George Whitefeld: Volume #1 Chapter #7

Chapter 7 discusses Whitefield’s initial voyage from England to the colony of Georgia.

Here is a description of his situation on the ship Whitaker as they journey began:

“The captains, both of the soldiers and sailors, with the surgeon an a young cadet, gave him soon to understand that they looked on him as an impostor, for a while treated him as such. The first Lord’s Day one of them played on the hautboy and nothing was to be seen but cards, and little heard but cursing and swearing. I could do no more for a season [writes Whitfield], than whilst I was writing, now and then turn my head by way of reproof to a lieutenant who swore as though he was born of a swearing constitution. Now and then he would take the hint, return my nod with a ‘Doctor, I ask your pardon’, and then to his swearing and cards again.'” [pg=152]

Now read about the transition on the Whitaker:

“The next step was taken by Captain Whiting. Affected by the work of the Gospel in his own heart, and concerned now for the spiritual welfare of his men, he ordered that chairs be set out on the deck and planks placed across them for the soldiers and passengers to sit during the services. Thus the deck of the Whitaker became a sort of floating chapel and, since Whitfield says that he ‘arranged to meet with any soldiers who could sing by note, to join divine Psalmody every day’, we can wonder whether he intended to supply it with a male choir.”  [pg=154]

This account describes Whitefield’s arrival to Gibraltar the headquarters of the British Fleet on the way to Georgia:

“Whitfield found he was already known at the Rock and was treated as something of a celebrity. He was provided with goodly accommodation on shore, the ministers of the Church of England asked him to conduct daily prayers and to preach on Sundays, and the Governor invited him to dine daily at his mansion.” [pg=155]

Chapter 7 recounts Whitefield’s relentless efforts to minister to the soldiers and travelers on board the Whitaker. The fruit was a complete turn around amongst the people. You should read it for your self to gain insight into how Whitfield was so able to bring a transformation during the voyage.

Get in the Game: Fundraising – Upcoming Training

Steve Shadrach and his Support Raising Solutions have trained 15,000 missionaries to be fully-funded.  Watch the video and attend the Conference Feb. 6 – 8 to get training to mobilize Christians to partner with you financially so you can preach the Gospel full-time:

Come and join hundreds of support raising leaders as we collaborate, share best practices, and learn how we can equip our staff to thrive in a crucial part of their ministry role – mobilizing the financial resources to maximize the effectiveness of their family and ministry.

Watch this short invitation from Steve Shadrach as he shares the story of how God has used SRS from being a trainer of support raisers to a gatherer of leaders in the SRS Network and the Support Raising Leaders Conference. If part of your calling is to shepherd and lead those who raise support, how are you equipping yourself and sharpening your skills? “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” Proverbs 27:17. Come be sharpened and sharpen others as we all pursue a spiritually healthy, vision-driven, and fully funded ministry culture.

Get in the Game: Fundraising – the Biblical perspective

First, let’s put so called fundraising into a proper perspective:

“Fundraising is not asking people to give you their money to pay for something you would pay for if you had the money.

Fundraising is inviting Christians to partner with you in your work and mission so they can receive the blessing here and in eternity of investing in God’s Kingdom.

So whether you can afford a trip or not you should ask Christians to partner with you.”

Pray about this and let it sink in what is being communicated as we go forward discussing how to mobilize Christians to partner with you financially.

Open Air Preaching: Some sow, some water, God gives the increase

What is your goal in preaching the Word?  Draw a crowd, create conversations? Stir up hostility within the crowd?

What does Paul say is his perspective on what is happening in his preaching?

I Corinthains 3:1-9

And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?

I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.

For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.

Paul says he labors to sow and water the Word and God gives the increase.  Your job is to sow and water the Word. You have no other obligation other than to directly, clearly, consistently and for extended periods of time preach the Word.

Ministry Team

Kevin Katzmann – Ontario, Canada

Kevin Katzmann is a sinner saved by the grace of God, through faith alone in Christ alone. He is married to Christina and together they have three children, Curtis, Cameron and Catherine. Through a heart wrenching trial God graciously saved Kevin by bringing a deep conviction of his sin and the holiness of God. Now a new creation in Christ, Kevin loves to preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified, and longs to see the church equipped for the Great Commission. Kevin has lead a weekly witnessing team on the streets in Burlington and Hamilton since 2013 and serves as an Elder at Pineland Baptist Church.

Jeff Mardling – Ontario, Canada

My name is Jeff – Not only am I a born again follower of Jesus Christ, I have been cleverly disguised as a funeral director in Chatham-Kent, Ontario.  I have been married to my wonderful wife Susan since 1995 and we have three sons, Cameron, Joel and Noah.  I have a passion for the lost and help lead a weekly evangelism team from our church on the streets of London, Ontario.  I also serve with a local missions ministry and outreach broadcast called The Cross Current and TCCRadio.com

Ivan Town – Allen Park, MI

My name is Ivan and I live in Michigan near Detroit.  I was born in a much more rural section of the state eventually got my BS in computer science.  But don’t think I’m a math pro – I had to make up for serious slacking by summer classes, a 5th year and tons of grace. (that I was unaware of at the time)

I got married and we moved to Maine for her med school adventure.  It’s a beautiful place.  Be sure to stop through there if you can.  In Maine I was hired by my current employer.  I mostly do website programming.  They even let me work from home now that I’ve had to move away!  It’s been a tremendous blessing from the Lord to have this job which I love.

Our first son was born in Maine and our daughter was born while in residence in Quincy, Illinois.

All that time, I thought that I was a Christian.  I had no idea how ignorant and foolish I was.  During a difficult marital time, the Lord opened my eyes and commandeered my life.  Romans 8:28 burned it’s reality into my soul soon after.  Although my marriage dissolved, our Master was leading me somewhere I never imagined.

I thank and praise the Lord for transforming an introvert like me into someone who is completely willing to be a fool for Christ.  As it seems to be our Lord’s custom, He continued to astound me by raising up some like-minded evangelism crazies like me at my church!

I’m grateful to be able to serve the body as a foot.  I’m so happy to be saved from myself.  I pray that I’m able to love Jesus more by loving his church.  I look forward to spending time with you in service to our Captain.

Zoe White – Tickfaw, LA

Hi, my name is Zoe White (pronounced “Zo”).  I live in the little Village of Tickfaw, Louisiana; conveniently located between New Orleans and Baton Rouge.  My wife, Chelsea, and I are blessed with four beautiful children that keep our home quite lively: Zuri, Cruz, Crozby, and Azalea.  (We also have 3 children in Heaven that we look forward to seeing again very soon.)

In 2016, God introduced me to the ministry of Ray Comfort at Living Waters and the concepts of Biblical evangelism.  Although I have sensed a call to missions for many years and went on several mission trips around the world, God used the study of Biblical evangelism to convict me of how little I shared the gospel in my daily life and how unbiblical some of my methods were.  I repented and asked God to teach me how to share the gospel obediently and faithfully.  By His grace, I hand out gospel tracts regularly now, pursue evangelistic conversations everywhere I go, and I started my new life of open air preaching at the Super Bowl Outreach in February 2017.  All glory to God for opening my eyes to the need around me!  It is such a joy to proclaim the Good News that God is reconciling sinners to Himself through the perfect life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ!  As His ambassador, I go forward into the fray, to declare the Good News of my King and Savior, that I may share in His sufferings for the sake of the elect and for His glory!

Through the assistance of Bill Adams and the George Whitefield Program, (and many other evangelists that have offered sound counsel) God has allowed me to establish Declaring Truth Ministries to bring God’s glorious gospel to the New Orleans area and beyond.

Declaring Truth Ministries glorifies God by declaring “the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation” (Eph. 1:13) through open-air preaching, literature distribution, and “everywhere evangelism” so that all peoples would hear and believe in Jesus Christ.  Seeking to be good stewards of God’s grace in our lives, we are declaring the gospel of Jesus Christ boldly to all peoples and equipping believers to do the same.

We are building a team of ministry partners now to support our open-air evangelism ministry.  You may learn more about partnering with Declaring Truth Ministries at declaringtruth.com/donate.

Preacher Profile: Doc Schank

Meet Bill Schank
I was raised in the Catholic religion. Less than 2 month’s after Graduating High School in 1982 I enlisted in the United States Air Force. On the evening of Resurrection Sunday (April of 1989, while I was working in the Emergency Room as an Emergency Medical Technian, at Ramstein Air Base West Germany), Chaplain Richard Spearman came in to visit us. While we were talking briefly, he said, “SGT. Schank, if you ever want to talk, Please call me and we can set up an appointment”. I made an appointment with Chaplain Richard Spearman (and we met once a week) for 4 week’s. During those appointments, Chaplain Spearman “took me through” the 10 Commandments. I experienced, exactly what GOD says in Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. I truly experienced Godly sorrow, as I sat in Chaplain Spearman’s office: and I wept over all of the sin in my life. Praise The LORD, that GOD granted me the gift of Repentance and I was born again on 26th of May 1989. Four month’s later, I went through a very similar experience just like Job experienced in the Bible. (I was Medically Retired from the United States Air Force for post traumatic stress. Due to the Air Show Disaster that happened at Ramstein Air Base on 28 August 1988. 3 Italian Fighter Jets collided while performing a Very Dangerous “Heart Shaped Maneuver”. The 1 Jet, “clipped” 2 other Jet’s on the tail of their Aircraft, and that Fighter Jet Tumbled right through the Crowd of Spectators: Wounding 500 people and killing 70 other Spectators. I was 1 of MANY Medical Personnel who worked on all of the wounded and dealt with many of the dead bodies. ***GOD IS GOOD, and he has brought me a Very Long Way in “healing” from dealing with all of that Trauma.
Praise The LORD, in 1993 GOD brought Ginny into my life and we were Married on 29 July 1995. She TRULY Is My Proverbs 31 Bride/Wife, & 7 day’s ago and Thanks to GOD: We Celebrated our 22nd Wedding Anniversary!!! We have 5 Adult Children: Sabrina (35), Eric (34), Aeron (33), Alyx (28), and Ana (27). And, GOD has Blessed us with 9 Beautiful Grandchildren!! During the Spring, Summer and Fall of 1993 & 1994 I did evangelism on the Street’s of Saint Paul: handing out Gospel Tract’s and 1:1 witnessing.
The very 1st time that I Preached in the Open Air, in St.Paul Minnesota, I experienced physical persecution from the Police; Unfortunately, I ran from doing evangelism on the Street’s, until 2005. The Spring of 2005 I started evangelizing on the Street’s of Downtown Minneapolis with other Believer’s. (2005- 2008 we handed out Gospel Tract’s and did 1:1 witnessing). 2009 is the 1st year that I started Preaching The Gospel in the Open Air, and by GOD’S GRACE I’m still Preaching The Gospel in Downtown Minneapolis and sometimes in other States. Praise GOD, I have been to the Super Bowl Outreach 6 times, the Fall for Greenville Outreach 3 times (when they used to have it), and I have been to a few Outreaches in New York City. Also, by GOD’S Grace and Strength, I have been to the Ukraine (during the Summer) on Short-Term Mission’s Trips 2009, 2010 & 2011. And, 3 year’s ago I was in Guatemala for a Short-Term Mission’s Trip. LORD Willing, this coming February, I will be 1 of the Team Leader’s @ Super Bowl Outreach ’18. ***I Love to Preach The Gospel and “Lift Up” The Name That Is ABOVE Every name. To plead with all of the lost soul’s to be Reconciled to GOD. And to warn/let ALL of them know, that one day Every Knee Shall Bow, and Every Tongue Confess That JESUS Christ Is LORD, To The GLORY Of GOD The Father!!
This past May 17th – May 30th: I was in Israel with 6 other Brother’s Preaching The Gospel. (6 of us were from the United States & Brother Desmond Smyth came from Dublin, Ireland). Praise The LORD, we Preached in Jerusalem, Caparneum, Eliat (I don’t know if I spelled that correctly; It’s the Southernmost City in Israel), and in Tel Aviv. The Gospel was FAITHFULLY Preached, we gave away MANY Bibles that were in the Hebrew language and Many Ingil’s (That means New Testament’s that were in Arabic). SOLO DEO GLORIA!!!

Preacher Profile: Stephen Locklear

Meet Stephen Locklear

My name is Stephen Locklear. I live in the small town of Pembroke, NC, which is also where I was raised. I have been blessed to have wonderful Christian parents (James and Brenda Locklear) and three brothers (Aaron, Mark, Everette) and a sister (Melissa). I was raised in a Christian home and attended Christian summer camps several times. I had a false conversion experience at one of these summer camps when I was 11 years old. It was an emotional experience that resulted in no change of life and no desire for intimacy with God. God was patient with me for the next 10 years, as I tried to convince myself that I was saved, even though I wanted to continue living in sin. In the early hours of November 17, 1994, in my college apartment living room, I became engaged in a spiritual conversation with my Jewish roommate. He was not a believer and as I attempted to defend the fact that Jesus is the Messiah, God brought conviction on me like never before. I went to my room to get alone with God and He saved me right then by His irresistible grace. I repented of my sin and trusted in Christ as my Savior and He granted me eternal life.

God changed me heart so that I loved the things I used to hate, and hated the things I used to love. I now loved God, loved reading the Bible and praying, and loved going to church.

In 1998, God blessed me with a wonderful, loving wife (Natoshia). God gave us a son in 2001 (Nathan) and a daughter in 2004 (Brianna). In 2008, God called me into street evangelism after watching an episode of the Way of the Master with Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron. I began setting up booths at parades, festivals, fairs and flea markets in order to give out gospel tracts and engage the lost in gospel conversations. I attended an evangelism training called The Ambassador’s Academy in May 2010, where I open-air preached for the first time. I later attended another evangelism conference in Philadelphia (Jeremiah Cry Ministries), where I did more street preaching and it was confirmed to my conscience that I was called to open-air preach. I have been privileged to lead evangelism training in three different churches.

In the summer of 2013, God led me to several other brothers and sisters in Christ who were also burdened for street evangelism and we began doing monthly outreaches at festivals, abortion clinics, and college campuses. I was blessed to be able to attend two Super Bowl outreaches with Sports Fan Outreach International (SFOI). In May 2014, my family and I began attending Crossway of Pembroke church. Today, God continues to mold me into the image of His Son Jesus Christ and gives me the boldness and wisdom that I need to engage the lost with the Gospel.
