Pro Bowl ’18

Here’s some brief videos of Andy and Sean preaching at the Pro Bowl Sunday, January 29.

Open Air Preaching: Consistency

One fundamental element to being a fruitful evangelist is consistency.  This means evangelizing at the same location, like a local sports venue, or the same people, like fans at major sporting events.

Churches meets in the same location at the same time each week in part so people can find the church and attend. Imagine if the church met in different locations weekly and at different times that would make it more difficult for people to attend.

In others words people need to know they can depend on you.  Once they learn they can trust you and that you will be at the same location and same time for events then you will be able to make deeper inroads into the lives of the people attending an event.

George Whitfield Bio – Vol. 1 – Chap. 15

Chapter 15 is entitled “John Wesley becomes an Open-Air Preacher” highlights the transition of Whitefield’s burgeoning ministry in Bristol to John Wesley.

Whitefield was holding ‘nearly thirty meetings a week with audiences which totaled – according to his estimates – forty or fifty thousand’. [pg 273]

Wesley was Whitefield’s fourth choice after Hutchins, Kinchin and Harris. After Wesley arrived in Bristol to take over Whitefield’s work and seeing Whitefield preach his initial two days, Saturday evening and Sunday, Wesley wrote in his journal, “I could scarce reconcile myself to this strange way of preaching in the fields, of which he set me an example on Sunday; having been all my life  (till very lately) so tenacious of every point relating to decency and order, that I should have thought the saving of souls almost a sin if it had not been done in a church.” [pg 274].

You see in Chapter 15 the development of Wesley’s comfort with open air preaching and his increased skill which he deploys to maximize the opportunity.

Dallimore writes of Wesley’s thought that led him to accept Whitefield’s offer to take over his work:

“Wesley was deeply moved by the prospect which such a ministry opened up. The reaching of vast numbers of mankind, the freedom to range at will and preach wherever opportunity afforded – these advantages could not fail to make a powerful appeal to so earnest man.” [pg 275]

Thus you have the beginning of John Wesley’s expansive and powerful open air ministry.

Get in the Game: NCAA Conference Championships

Some games have organized pre-game festivities known as FanFests that attract large crowds earlier than if there is no pre-game event. For college football these games are typically Conference Championships and Bowl Games and for College basketball the Final Four has a FanFest.

The larger crowds who arrive at the venue earlier than if there are no organized pre-game activities are able to hear the Word more than once and often are more communicative primarily because they have more time to interact than if they simply arrived at the stadium and walked directly inside.

So if you have an opportunity to preach at a Conference Championship or Bowl Game take it because of the opportunity for their to be more souls at the venue earlier who have time to hear the Gospel more often and Lord willing respond.

SFOI 1000 – Jamie Clark at USC

Thank you for your prayers as the Gospel of Jesus Christ was proclaimed outside Williams-Brice Stadium leading up to the USC vs Wofford game. Praise the Lord that many people were on hand to hear His Gospel this afternoon, as well as the saints that were there and encouraged by the open-air preaching, including Willie Scott, a former USC tight end from the 70’s. They, too, were an encouragement to me. Many received Gospel tracts and New Testaments, as well as Gospels of John. A few folks received “Evolution vs God” DVD’s. Several one on one conversations were had also. Let us give thanks that the word of our Lord went forth in multiple ways to multiple people. Please pray for all who heard the Gospel in one or more forms, especially one couple , Davis and Kelly, who requested prayer for physical ailments, but whose primary needs were to know Christ as Lord and Savior.
